  Before the 1931 Napier Earthquake, the sea surrounded the Napier Hill.

Long ago, Whales would often enter the inlet. Sometimes they stranded themselves on the sand banks and shallows.

From the Western shores, the view from Napier Hill resembles a beached Whale, and this is why it was known by our Ancestors as, Pakake, which means Whale Island.
