FAQs

What's the difference between greenstone and pounamu?

Both refer to the same stone and are used interchangeably throughout New Zealand. Pounamu is the traditional Māori term, while greenstone is the English translation.

Is greenstone the same as jade?

Yes. In New Zealand, greenstone is a type of jade, specifically referring to nephrite jade.

How do I know if greenstone is genuine?

Buy from a seller who can tell you exactly where the stone came from. At Creative Treasures, we source our greenstone from two of New Zealand’s most respected pounamu regions: Hokitika and Arrowtown.

Is all greenstone the same quality?

Not at all. Pounamu comes in several varieties, each with its own character. Kahurangi is the rarest, displaying a highly translucent body that is vivid, light green, and without flaws. Kawakawa is the most common, featuring a rich dark green with natural inclusions, while Inanga is a softer pearly grey-green.

Neither is better than the other, and your choice of greenstone jewellery depends on what draws you in.

How do I care for my greenstone jewellery?

Greenstone is tough and well-suited to everyday wear. Over time, the natural oils from your skin can enhance the stone’s surface and deepen its character. Keep it away from harsh chemicals and wipe it down with a soft cloth when needed.
