The term "whakairo" itself refers to the overall art of Māori carving, encompassing the creation of art in wood, bone, or stone to tell stories, preserve history, and express beliefs.  

Understanding the terms:

Whakairo: This is the Māori art form of carving. It can refer to wood carving (whakairo rākau), but also carving in stone or bone.

This design was historically used by carvers to illustrate the character of the subject they were carving. It's a form of storytelling and expression within the broader context of Māori art.
